Cross-Platform Compatibility in Ghosts

Company: Activision
Product: Call of Duty: Ghosts

Have you heard that there is cross-platform compatibility in Ghosts, but you don't know exactly what is cross-compatible? Sit back and relax and lemme 'splain...

Multiplayer Gameplay (No.)

First off, no... you're not going to load up your copy of Call of Duty: Ghosts on the PS4 and play against someone on the Xbox 360 or PC. Not going to happen. I don't know if that level of cross-platform compatibility will ever see the light of day for a game; it requires getting around some fairly hefty issues with licensing and security and legal issues and then you have to worry about any competitive advantage/ disadvantage this would present. If you're playing multiplayer on a system, your opponents will be playing on that same system. Moving on.

Call of Duty Profiles

Your Call of Duty Profile is now portable across current and next-gen within the same console family. If you set up your Call of Duty Profile on the PS3, you can take it with you to the PS4, and vice-versa. This will work with your existing account if you've already secured on through Call of Duty Elite, or if you sign up for a new one in-game or online. You can take your Call of Duty: Ghosts stats, in-game achievements, unlocks and such with you from the PS3 to the PS4. You could do this from the current gen to the next-gen in the Xbox family, as well, but you can't do this across two different console families. In other words, you won't be able to transfer data from your PS3 to an Xbox One or from an Xbox 360 to a PS4.

Clan Wars

Call of Duty Clan Wars is a sort of "meta-game" built on top of the multiplayer gaming stats generated in Call of Duty: Ghosts. You join a Clan and then you try to achieve set goals to better your Clan's score and "Capture" areas of a map. Every game you play counts toward your Clan's stats, even if you're don't pay attention to the goals and you're just playing for fun. There are in-game rewards for achieving these goals, including personalization options. This feature is across all platforms. You can play multiplayer on PC, then switch to the Xbox 360 then jump on your PS4 for a while, and as long as you've joined the same Clan on all those systems (which will be possible, now), all of your played games count toward your Clan's score.

Second Screen App

As I mentioned, you can participate in Clan Wars without even realizing it, since it's based on multiplayer game stats, but if you want to really keep your eye on your Clan's stats, the new Call of Duty App will help keep you connected and informed. Created by Beachhead in collaboration with Infinity Ward, the Call of Duty App is built for mobile devices and tablets and lets you view the Clan Wars map and keep a close watch over your Clan's placement.

Additionally, if you are involved in managing a Clan, the Call of Duty App gives you in-depth Clan management capabilities, where you can administrate membership, create and modify Clans, edit your Clan's Emblem using a touch-based emblem editor and even a chat room for interacting with the members of your Clan.

However, you don't have to be the leader of a Clan to use the Call of Duty App. Yes, you can use it to interact with other members of your Clan and check on the Clan Wars, but you can also use it to manage your loadout for multiplayer. You can swap up your loadouts pre-game or in-game with the touch interface and you can use it to edit your squad member's appearance and loadout during the pre-match intermission. After matches, you can use the second screen app to review your post-match results and even easily share them via Facebook and Twitter.

The Call of Duty App is, basically, Call of Duty Elite, but designed with the second screen experience in mind and built with all of the knowledge that was gained through building Call of Duty Elite.
