Someone to Watch Over

Someone to Watch Over is a heartfelt story about Eleanor "Lennie" Riley, a 40-something woman who has struggled her entire life. Born in the small (fictional) town of Mosely, TN, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, she's had it rough from the start, beginning with the death of her mother during her birth. Everything seemed to come easy to her older brother John, so much so that he is a huge success now, while she continues to struggle. She has returned to Mosely from Alaska to reconnect with her father, whom she parted ways with at the age of 17 and hasn't really spoken to since.

When her father passes away right before she planned to see him, Lennie is devastated at the lost possibility of amends, but then John decides to recreate their only family vacation ever - a trek from Mosely, TN to Cape Canaveral, FL to see a space shuttle launch. It just so happens that a launch is scheduled a few days away and since John aims to use his Dad's one and only scrapbook of the event as a guide, Lennie decides to go along. What she doesn't share with John is that she hopes to detour to Tallulah Falls, GA in the hopes of meeting up with a "guardakin angel" - one of the fabled elderly persons in the Appalachians who might reconnect her to a parent who has passed on. Since Lennie keeps having visions of her recently departed dad, she is desperate to contact him and make things right.

While nothing goes as planned, whether it be the decrepit state of the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Motel, the fact that Rock City is closed, or the various insane calamities that occur on the way, Lennie and John meet some wonderful folks along the way and have the adventure of a lifetime. For the Riley's, they just might refine what family means to them on this adventure.

Someone to Watch Over is a sweet tale with a bit of a ghostly edge to it. It's not my typical type pf story because it's much more family drama than supernatural, but it is a heartwarming tale. I especially enjoyed it since I live in Chattanooga and was familiar with a lot of the locations mentioned, despite the fact that Mosely is a fictional town. There's much more to this story, but to reveal any more would do the reader a disservice. If you like Southern stories about family that have a slight supernatural bend to them, check out Someone to Watch Over.
